Winners: Golden Globes Highlights
The Golden Globes kicked off the award cycle to very little fanfare as Global tensions continue between the foreign press and Hollywood (something stupid I don’t even understand or care about). But the night was full of big winners and here are my four favorites:
- Best Motion Picture, drama: Power of the Dog
I reviewed Power of the Dog when it was released and dinged it pretty hard for being boring but I noted it was a masterpiece in terms of artistic contribution and this award speaks to that analysis. Power of the Dog is a liberal film which Im sure easy easy for Hollywood to praise but it was also very well acted and beautifully composed. A good pick for best picture.
- Best Actress in a TV Musical or Comedy Series: Jean Smart, Hacks
Jean Smart has been a sensation and an icon for decades and is finally getting the recognition she deserves. She is everything in Hacks and the win is more than well earned.
- Best Supporting Actress in a Drama TV Series: Sarah Snook, Succession
Sarah Snook is inextricable from her character Shiv Roy on award favorite, Succession. One of the more complex characters with perhaps the most screen time, Snook manages to carry the show while still portraying a character who is routinely cast aside. A deserving win.
- Best Actor in a TV Series, musical or comedy: Jason Sudekis, Ted Lasso
There is nothing not to love about Ted Lasso as a series and Ted Lasso as a character. Season 2 gave us Jason Sudekis at his absolute finest exploring the complexities between being a cheerful and happy person who also grapples with anxiety. Jason Sudekis was the only choice to win this category.
One show down and three or so to go!
