Does Sabrina Carpenter kill Shawn Mendes in her new video?

Sabrina Carpenter recently released her music video for her song “Taste.” The video stars popular actresses Jenna Ortega and Sabrina Carpenter playing rival lovers to a singular boyfriend. The video is very campy and silly and full of bright colors and lots of blood. The two girls take turns murdering each other through the high energy song until in the end it’s the boyfriend who gets murdered. 

The song itself is about a girl in an on/off relationship with a boy who has gotten back together with his other girlfriend but is still sort of also with her. The chores of the song says: 

I heard you’re back together and if that’s true

You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissin’ you

If you want forever, I bet you do

Just know you’ll taste me too.

So it’s about the rivalry between female lovers and the music video takes a very playful approach to the rivalry where the two women ultimately end up at the boy’s funeral and bond over how they didn’t like him that much anyway.

What does Shawn Mendes have to do with it? Shawn Mendez is also a famous musician who had a long term girlfriend, another singer, Camila Cabello. Camilla and Shawn broke up in 2021. Sabrina and Shawn were publicly seeing each other in the winter of 2023. But then in March 2023 Shawn Mendes said they weren’t dating and implied they never had been (but there was photographic evidence indicating they were. By April of 2023, Shawn and Camilla were together again very publicly. But by June of 2023 they were over again. 

A lot of people have speculated the song was about Shawn and Camilla but after the music video it’s pretty clear that it must be. First of all, Jenna Ortega looks an awful lot like Camilla Cabello. 

And second, perhaps more convincing, the unknown actor they chose for the boyfriend is the spitting image of Shawn Mendes.
