Déjà Brew? Kamala’s Awkward Beer Moment on Colbert Sparks Bad Hillary Flashbacks
Kamala drank a beer on tv and thinks now she will seem cool and people will want to vote for her.
On the campaign trail in 2016, Hillary Clinton wanted to be ‘one of the people.’ Because she wasn’t that at all (still isn’t, never was, never will be and also none of them are) she had to turn to old ridiculous (not to mention completely untrue) tropes about what people want in a president. She decided instead of being honest, thoughtful and putting America first she would become “someone you can have a beer with” [insert deep and intense eye roll].
In a cartoonish fashion, Kamala Harris went on Late Show with Stephen Colbert (who is to the DNC what Caesar Flickerman is to the Capitol in the Hunger Games) where she was offered a beer. Colbert claims it was his idea and that he reached out to Kamala’s team before she came on and asked if he could do the bit, but considering his status as Party mouthpiece it strikes me as more true that he was asked by her team. Either way, it was cartoonish because Colbert actually stated out loud the trope “someone you can have a beer with” before handing Kamala a Miller High Life. I’m sure they were both so pleased with themselves when she took the tiniest sip possible (not sure it even was a true sip) before setting the beer down and saying “the Champagne of beers!”
Unlike these two, President Trump has never felt the need to pretend to be something he isn’t. Being authentic and true to himself, Trump has achieved more ‘relatability’ than anyone ‘you could have a beer with.’ In fact, one of his most watched interviews of all time was when he sat down with Theo Von and had a frank discussion about sobriety. Maybe Kamala should try just being herself if she can even remember who that is. But more likely she’ll keep doing forced, hammy, stunts like this and grow more and more distant from everyday Americans.
