The Conservative Critic
What’s JD Vance’s favorite TV show right now?
There’s plenty of good(ish) TV out there right now but also a lot of noise supporting shows that actually aren’t all that. Here is what you should and shouldn’t be watching based on my guess about what show our favorite and least favorite politicos are into right now:
JD Vance is probably watching Daredevil: Born Again
Disney+ has had a real hit and miss relationship with its original streaming series particularly within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Its newest installment is Daredevil: Born Again which brings back Vincent D’Onofrio as ‘Kingpin’ and Charlie Cox as ‘Daredevil’/Matt Murdock is great. The show balances the darkness of the Daredevil storyline with a fresh political story that allows for viewers to decide whose side they’d be on in a city where vigilante justice has replaced law and order. It’s got action, it’s got an attractive bearded hero that is a lawyer in his early 40s. JD would be all over this and so should you.
Barack Obama is definitely obsessed with The Studio right now
The Studio on Apple TV has gotten a lot of accolades from critics and viewers alike. It’s definitely not a bad show. Seth Rogan leads a stellar cast and the show is packed to the hilt with celebrity guest stars from Ron Howard to Zach Efron. Its basically entertaining and often funny thanks to the strength of the cast. My major beef with the show is that it seems like a very long inside joke for people in Hollywood that no one outside of Hollywood can actually fully appreciate. And it feels like the people who are really really into it, are kind of sycophantically believing they are insiders who can get the joke. But definitely aren’t and can’t. Barack Obama is the absolute key audience for this show.
Pam Bondi is probably into the new Matlock
The new Matlock stars Cathy Bates as a lawyer gone undercover to find out who is responsible for protecting Big Pharma from opioid liability. The show is part indictment on opioids and part procedural drama where old ideas are made fresh. It’s led by multiple female lawyers with a lot of ambition and a penchant for justice. This show seems like a remake no one needed but has been a lot better than anyone expected and definitely benefits from the veteran talent of Cathy Bates, Jason Ritter and Beau Bridges. Pam Bondi would be totally into this show. As one of the primary leaders on the new war on drugs and herself a clever female lawyer, Bondi would totally get where this show is going. If you like procedurals, predictable formulas and pantsuits (you had me at procedural)- Matlock is your bag just like probably Pam.
David Hogg is in love with Adolescence
Adolescence explores the uprising of knife violence in the UK and specifically lays it at the feat of “toxic masculinity” and online misogyny. If there is anything David Hogg would sign off on, it’s a show about boys without access to guns finding a way to be violent anyway and blaming “masculinity” for the violence instead of questioning a myriad of other factors like economics or god forbid, toxic ‘girl power’ which does nothing to ensure the mental health and wellbeing of young men. To be fair, the star Owen Cooper is a very talented actor. Something Hogg can probably relate to very well.
Scott Bessent is secret watching The Valley
Treasury Secretary Bessent has risen to be considered one of President Trump’s most trusted administration officials. His calm and cool demeanor has placed him as the guy everyone is turning to for tariffs, DOGE and the economy. The Valley is a messy Vanderpump Rules spinoff about wealthy couples living in the suburbs of Los Angeles and all of their marriages are falling apart pretty dramatically. Something just tells me that Bessent needs a little chaos in his otherwise controlled life to take the edge off. Reality TV is for those of us with the most competence at work. We need an outlet for all that colorful energy. Bessent is probably one of us in that way. If you need to see what’s happening with the collapse of the marriage of Britney and Jax so that you can cope with your increasingly calm and professional emails, The Valley is for you. If you need to watch Kristin Doute become the most emotionally stable person in her friend group so you do not have to think about tariffs, The Valley is for you.
Hillary Clinton is watching The Handmaid’s Tale series finale
Apparently The Handmaid’s Tale has not been over for like five years like everyone thought and actually still has a season left to go.
Kristi Noem is finally watching Quantico
In 2015, ABC put out a TV show called Quantico that was literally made for Kristi Noem to become Secretary of Homeland Security. I used to affectionately refer to the show as “Hot FBI” and I never missed an episode. The characters run around doing Homeland Security in full glam and tight fitting costumes. They’re always wearing FBI gear everywhere to make sure everyone knows for sure they are part of the FBI. It’s camp. It’s glorious. It’s so bad that it circles back around to being good. This show was literally made for Kristi Noem. If you haven’t seen it in all its terrible glory you need to make the effort.
