Trump Ends Biden’s Loan Giveaway—Now Let’s End the Academic Grift

President Trump is absolutely right to reverse Biden’s student loan madness. Of course people should pay back their loans. That’s not even up for debate. But if we’re going to talk about personal responsibility, let’s also be honest about the mess the federal government created in the first place.

Conservatives are out here dunking on kids with “useless degrees,” but let’s not forget who funded those degrees in the first place: Uncle Sam. The federal government took over the loan industry, handed out money like Oprah (“You get a loan! You get a loan!”), let colleges jack up prices, and then acted shocked when a generation ended up broke, bitter, and deeply in debt. That’s not a personal failure — that’s a rigged system.

No sound financial institution would loan hundreds of thousands of dollars to an 18-year-old for a product with no real value. You couldn’t get that kind of loan for a car, a house, or a business idea without serious scrutiny. But for a gender studies degree from a school charging $80K a year? No problem! Because the government wanted academia to profit.

President Trump is right to restore accountability. The loans do need to be paid back. That’s a tough, adult lesson. But conservatives shouldn’t just be mocking the borrowers — we should be calling out the corrupt system that set them up to fail. We’re usually great at exposing the rot in academia and bloated government. Why go soft now?

Let’s support the policy. Let’s support the President. But let’s also be clear-eyed: the students didn’t rig this game. They were told a lie, funded by taxpayers, and funneled into a system that was designed almost explicitly to create profit for academic elites. Reform must go hand-in-hand with repayment. Otherwise, we’re just asking the next generation to fall for the same scam.
