Liberals Need To Chill Out About Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift, like most Americans, has not publicly endorsed a candidate for President. Taylor Swift doesn’t have to answer to any of us.
But the left and her leftist fans don’t agree. They are going full toxic bully.
Swift famously “came out” as a Democrat in 2018 when she was specifically supporting Senator Marsha Blackburn’s opponent (whose name neither I nor anyone can remember or be bothered to check). Setting aside the fact that Marsha Blackburn is the chief voice in Congress supporting the rights of musical artists, having championed required performance fees for many years against strong opposition, Taylor Swift thought Blackburn was anti-LGBTQ+ rights and decided to make her position known. While her endorsement may not have caused major backlash, it’s not exactly novel for a young, wealthy female celebrity to vote Democrat. But she ‘liked’ a social media post depicting her kicking someone labeled “Republicans” in the face. Ouch.
In the following years, she released her documentary Miss Americana, which dedicated a significant amount of time to detailing her political beliefs, which are left-leaning. She also indicated support for President Biden in the 2020 election via a cookie.
This year, Swift has yet to publicly disclose which presidential candidate she is planning to vote for. We can all reason that she is likely to be supporting Kamala Harris, considering she voted for her as Vice President in 2020 and has regularly expressed that she is a Democrat. Even though she didn’t endorse Joe Biden until October, the left seems particularly bugged that she hasn’t chosen to publicly endorse Kamala Harris. In fact, they’re entirely bullying her at this point.
Her fans and mainstream media outlets have been posting repeatedly about her “responsibility” and their disappointment in her. They’ve been suggesting that if she doesn’t endorse Kamala Harris, it will change her entire life and career. They’re particularly bothered that she didn’t disavow her close friend Brittany Mahomes (wife of Patrick Mahomes, who plays on the Kansas City Chiefs with Swift’s boyfriend, Travis Kelce) when she was “caught” liking a social media post of Donald Trump’s. Mahomes never actually endorsed Donald Trump; she simply liked something he said once. This alone, to the left, is enough to condemn your close friends and family. Politics first, family last.
The truth is that an endorsement by Taylor Swift wouldn’t mean much to Kamala Harris. While Taylor Swift is well-loved, those bullying her to endorse have already made their decisions, and those on the fence who are big enough fans of the singer to be swayed by her endorsement already know she’s a Democrat. Her right-wing fans, who are decided for Trump, aren’t going to switch sides at her word. And that’s okay. It’s good. It’s normal. It’s not a slight to Taylor Swift that she’s unlikely to sway the outcome of a presidential election.
What’s also true is that she can’t really win with a public endorsement. No matter whom she endorses, about 50% of her fans wouldn’t like her choice. Even if we guess her fans skew left (which I doubt is true, considering how large her fan base is), at least 40% of them would not like her choice.
At a new high in her career as she sails as the darling of Kansas, cozy with middle American families watching football and bringing their daughters to concerts, she has more to lose than before by bringing the emotional world of politics into her public life.
The most troubling thing about the left’s insistence that Taylor Swift endorse their candidate is that Kamala Harris doesn’t really have anything to gain from it. The goal of their bullying of Swift is truly only compliance. They want to be clear that a lack of enthusiasm will result in flogging.
Swift may ultimately endorse a candidate, and she has every right to do so. Like all endorsements, focusing on the positive would serve her well. Either way, I hope her leftist fans realize how crazy it is to suggest she has a moral responsibility to do so.
